White House Unveils AI Safeguards, Wins Support from Big Tech
The Biden administration is issuing guidelines for how government agencies should regulate artificial intelligence systems to curb discrimination, enhance transparency, and protect people's privacy.
The goal is to encourage innovation while also building safeguards against AI harms. The guidelines don't carry the force of law but are meant to influence how federal agencies approach AI.
The guidelines recommend agencies consider existing laws and assess AI risks, such as hackers biasing systems to get discriminatory results. They suggest agencies get public input before creating AI programs.
Kamala Harris says the guidelines will promote transparency, establish clear rules of the road, and strengthen accountability.
